LESBOS - ELECTRUM COINAGE - EL 1/12 Stater or hemihekte, Mytilene, ca. 530-522 BC

weight 1,18gr. ; electrum Ø 7mm.

obv. Head of calf right
rev. Incuse square with floral pattern inside

This hemihekte shows a great stylistical affinity with the hektes that would be minted somewhat later (from ca. 521) in Mytilene. Therefore Mytilene is considered the most likely mint. Bodenstedt registered only 1 example of this type. It is therefore extremely rare.

LESBOS - ELECTRUM COINAGE - EL 1/24 Stater or hemihekte, Mytilene, ca. 530-522 BC

weight 0,42gr. ; electrum Ø 5mm.

obv. Head of calf right
rev. Incuse square with irregular interior

This 1/24 stater shows a great stylistical affinity with the hektes that would be minted somewhat later (from ca. 521) in Mytilene. Therefore Mytilene is considered the most likely mint. Bodenstedt registered only 1/12 and 1/48 staters of this type, so it concerns here the missing denomination. Apparently unpublished and of the highest rarity.

LESBOS - EARLY BILLON AND SILVER COINAGE - BI 1/12 Stater, probably Mytilene or Methymna, circa 478-460 BC

weight 1,17gr. ; billon Ø 9mm.
Light Lesbian Standard
Series IV

obv. Confronted heads of two boars, ΛE above
rev. Incuse square with rough pattern

In addition to the electrum and silver coinages attributed to specific cities, in the late sixth and early fifth centuries BC, the island of Lesbos saw the production of an extensive series of coins in billon (an alloy of silver and bronze with a low silver content). It seems likely that the coinage was centralized in one or two mints. Although the cities of Mytilene and Methymna seem to be the most likely mints for this production, we cannot be certain about this. The coins from this period were minted according to various coinage standards. Although most of the billon issues are anepigraphic, a few carry abbreviated of monogrammatic Greek insriptions that appear to name ″the Lesbians″, ″the Antissaians″, and ″the Mytilenaians″ as the issuing authorities.

On these denominations the obverse features in inscription ΛE(Σ), a reference to the Lesbian koinòn. It offers evidence of its federal intention, but at the same time it shows its membership (independence ?) of certain poleis through the initial of their ethnic group. Rare.
