Ulrika Eleonora was a sister of the unmarried king Karl XII; after the death of her elder sister Hedvig Sofia in 1708, she became heir to the Swedish throne. Ulrika Eleonora was married to Friedrich of Hessen-Kassel in 1715. Ulrika′s devotion to her husband led her to subordinate her own ambitions to those of Friedrich. Thus, although Ulrika became queen in 1718 after Karl′s death, she abdicated in 1720 in favour of her husband, who came to the Swedish throne as Fredrik I (ruled 1720–51).
