SWITSERLAND ( SCHWEIZ ) - SANCT GALLEN, ABTEI (ABBEY) - ANONYMOUS - Brakteat n.d. (ca. 1240)
weight 0,46. ; silver 21mm.
obv. The Lamb of God, walking to the left, its head is turned back, and a crozier is shown behind it, within thick circle surrounded by a border of crosses and squares rev. Incusum of obverse
In the Middle Ages, not only the king exercised the right to mint coins, but he also granted this privilege to religious institutions. For example, the Abbey of St. Gallen on Lake Constance circulated bracteates, thin, single-sided pennies (from the Latin ″bractea″, meaning thin sheet metal). The Lamb of God was already depicted on St. Gallen half-bracteates and remained a popular motif until the 14th century.
