KINGDOM OF ARMENIA - TIGRANES II THE GREAT, 95-56 BC - AR Tetradrachm, Tigranokerta, circa 80-68 BC

weight 15,71gr. ; silver Ø 25mm.

obv. Head of Tigranes II to right, wearing diademed tiara with five peaks
and ornamented with an eight-pointed star between two eagles, their heads
turned back towards the star; beed and reel border.
rev. The Tyche of Artaxata seated right on rock, holding long palm frond in 
her outstretched right hand; below, river-god Araxes swimming right;
ΔH monogram below on rocks, AP-monogram in inner right field,
BAΣIΛEΩΣ on right, TIΓPANOY on left, on rock; beed and reel border.

The star symbol between the two eagles on his crown may depict Halley′s Comet.

Tigranes II, more commonly known as Tigranes the Great was King of Armenia under whom the country became, for a short time, the strongest state to Rome′s east. He was a member of the Artaxiad Royal House. Under his reign, the Armenian kingdom expanded beyond its traditional boundaries, allowing Tigranes to claim the title Great King, and involving Armenia in many battles against opponents such as the Parthian and Seleucid empires, and the Roman Republic.
