Erik VII of Pomerania was born ca. 1381 Bogusław in Darłowo, Pomerania (modern Poland), son of Duke Vratislav VII of Pomerania and Maria of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Queen Margaret I of Denmark adopted him as her heir to secure the union, bringing him to Denmark. He was crowned as King Erik III of Norway (1389), Erik VII of Denmark (1397) and Erik XIII of Sweden (1397), officially forming the Kalmar Union. He ruled alongside queen Margaret until her death in 1412 and then continued as sole reigning king. He married Philippa of England (daughter of Henry IV) in 1406; she was a strong queen but died childless in 1430. He undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem (1423-25). His reign saw consolidation and expansion but rebellions, especially in Sweden, and struggles with the Hanseatic League, lead to increased taxes. After Philippa′s death, his rule became more autocratic and in 1439 he was deposed from the Danish throne. After losing his crowns, he famously became a pirate on the Baltic Sea from the island of Gotland. After that he returned to his homeland, ruling as Duke Eric I of Pomerania (1449-1459) until his death in 1459 at age 77/78.
Næstved, Denmark, boasts ancient roots (400-500 BC) but grew significantly from 1135 with a Benedictine monastery, becoming a key medieval market town on the Suså River, known for its trade and religious importance. Key medieval landmarks include St. Morten′s Church and the Helligåndshuset (now a museum), while its history as a trading hub is seen in market squares like Axeltorv. Today, it′s a vibrant city blending historic architecture, modern shopping, and cultural attractions like the Næstved Museum and the influential Næstved Kunstby graffiti scene.

Ulrika Eleonora was a sister of the unmarried king Karl XII; after the death of her elder sister Hedvig Sofia in 1708, she became heir to the Swedish throne. Ulrika Eleonora was married to Friedrich of Hessen-Kassel in 1715. Ulrika′s devotion to her husband led her to subordinate her own ambitions to those of Friedrich. Thus, although Ulrika became queen in 1718 after Karl′s death, she abdicated in 1720 in favour of her husband, who came to the Swedish throne as Fredrik I (ruled 1720–51).
